The baby scratch is a simple technique and likely the first scratch you learned. It’s considered basic, but its importance is overlooked. While it’s easy to do, lots of development is required to master it.
The biggest mistake DJ’s make is not recognizing most scratches depend on the baby scratch. To build control, speed and cleanliness you need to have command over your baby scratches.
STANDARD SCRATCH TRAINING LIMITS
The typical approach for learning how to scratch, is to learn one technique and then learn the next technique and so on. The problem is, not enough time is invested in advancing each scratch technique you learn.
One of the reasons the baby gets taken for granted besides being easy to learn, is it's considered basic. The term basic implies there’s not much you can do with it. I challenge that term because I know you can do lots of advanced things with it.
To demonstrate the importance of the baby scratch, here’s a list of scratches that depend on it:
Forwards
Reverses
Stabs
Military
Transformer
Chirps
Slice
Drags
Fades
Joe Cooley
Uzi
OG Flare
Reverse OG Flare
1 Click Flare
2 Click Flare
3 Click Flare
Crab
Chirp Flare
Crescent Flare
Lazer
Tazer
Boomerang
Autobahn
3 Click Swing
Autoswing
Now you might be thinking, that’s almost all the scratches in my Scratch Technique playlist and you’d be right. This should make you realize how valuable it is to continue developing your baby.
SCRATCHING MORE EXPRESSIVELY
While you may be working on scratching faster with your babies, you probably aren’t putting time into mixing different levels of speed you’ve learned. You could be mixing your scratch rhythms and making your babies more exciting to listen to.
The goal of a scratch freestyle is to keep your audience engaged. However, you could never achieve this if you only use one speed of babies.
MORE EXPRESSIVE SCRATCH OPTIONS
Let’s look at using different pitches with the baby scratch. You may have noticed lots of DJ’s scratch in the same pitch ranges and sound pretty monotone. You may not realize why this is a problem because typically when we measure a DJ’s scratch skills, we look at how fast they can scratch. While this is one way to measure scratch skills, it's just a means to an end.
Everything you do when you scratch should make your audience feel specific emotions you want them to feel. If you scratch in a similar range of pitch in your freestyles, you'll only get one type of emotional response from your audience.
That's why using pitch variety when you scratch is important because it makes you stand out and be felt more. If you don’t develop multiple pitches with the baby scratch, the rest of your scratching suffers.
That's why many DJ’s bore their audience. You can’t please everyone, but you do need to appeal to some people if you want to build a lasting fanbase.
A good first step for doing this, is knowing what pitches represent what emotions. Low pitch scratches equal mellow emotion and high pitch scratches equal dramatic emotion.
There's lots of differences as you go from lower pitched babies to higher pitched babies, but the main thing to remember is each degree of pitch is a different level of intensity.
It takes patience to develop a wide range of pitches with your baby scratch, but the payoff is worth it because your audience will love hearing you scratch more, when you offer them a wider range of emotion.
FREESTYLING WITH THE BABY SCRATCH
By now you should realize the importance of the baby scratch and how to develop it further. However, none of what you develop will have value if you’re not using these concepts in your freestyles.
A common fault of scratch education is skipping this important step. Most scratch education is fixated on scratch technique, but they don’t teach you how to freestyle effectively.
If you lack options with each scratch you know and you’re unsure how to put what you know together, you’ll have a hard time holding your audience’s attention.
Additionally, you need to learn how to put the emotions you’re expressing together like a good story, so your audience follows what you’re doing and anticipates everything that comes next. If you don’t want to go through endless trial and error, I can train you to freestyle scratch effectively and your audience will love you for it.
