The forward is an essential scratch. For most DJ’s, forwards are the first scratch you learn to do while using the record and fader together. This can feel awkward and takes getting used to. The main reason being, you have to sync your hands.
Syncing your record and fader hand is a challenge you’ll face with every scratch technique. The better you get at each technique, the more you’ll need to revisit your sync to make sure it's on point. The best thing about the forward is it addresses the challenge of sync early in your development and applies to all other scratches that start and end with the fader closed.
The main thing to keep in mind for clean forwards is to open the fader at the exact same time you release the record and close the fader at the exact same time you stop the record. If you open, or close the fader too soon, or too late you'll sound sloppy.
COMMON USES OF THE FORWARD SCRATCH
If you mix then you’re likely a heavy user of forwards. The majority of the time you scratch in a new song, you’re doing forwards whether you realize it or not.
Additionally, forwards are common for ending scratch patterns. This mostly results from the habit of using forwards to scratch in new songs. Mostly because it’s the easiest way to scratch in a new song.
Many DJ’s also play the entire sound when doing forwards. If most of your patterns end with a forward done the same way, it's boring. If you want to keep your crowd engaged, explore other options.
FORWARD SCRATCH CREATIVITY
I recommend using the forward at different times in your patterns. If you normally end your phrases with a forward, try beginning your phrases with a forward. You can also use it at various points in the middle of your patterns.
This is useful in mixing when you’re scratching in/out a popular vocal track. If you play the vocal in full with a forward often throughout your scratch ins/outs, your audience will get hyped because they’ll recognize the vocal. Combined with other scratches, it spices up the original vocal, making it more exciting.
Next, try doing forwards in different rhythms. The longer the sound you’re scratching with, the more options you’ll have. The longer you play the sound, the slower the rhythm and the shorter you play the sound, the faster the rhythm.
SPEED CHALLENGES WITH FORWARD SCRATCHES
As mentioned, you’ll need to shorten the record length of your forwards to gain speed. Doing so will challenge your record and fader hand sync. It’s not enough to get used to shortening up your forwards with the record. You also need to stay closer to your fader’s cutoff, in order to remain in sync with shorter record movements.
If you open the fader too far, you’ll have to rush to get it closed and you'll likely be inconsistent. One of the best ways to stay consistently closer to the cutoff is to barely open the fader. However, it's likely you’re over powering the fader, making it difficult to stay closer to the cutoff. In order to correct this and stay in sync, you need to use the right amount of fader power.
Additionally, the faster you go, the sooner you’ll need to stop the record, keeping the length of forwards shorter and quicker to pull back to do it again. The best way to achieve this is to keep your record hand as close as possible to the record after releasing it.
FORWARD SCRATCH FREESTYLING
If you learn to do all the things I’ve explained thus far, you’ll sound a lot cooler when using forwards in your freestyles. However, like most scratches, there’s tons you can do, that require in-depth training. Especially, when using these ideas among other scratch techniques. Not to mention all the technical challenges that'll result from trying these ideas.
While it took me many years to gain high levels of skill with my scratch techniques, particularly in a freestyle, you don’t have to go through those headaches. I can provide you with the coaching and training you need to freestyle scratch much more expressively. Whether you’re scratching in and out of songs, or showcasing your freestyling, you’ll gain the skills to keep your audience hooked.
