The CPU fan in my ThinkPad T440p broke some days ago and a replacement finally arrived. I show the difference in shape/size, test both the old and new fan with my bench power supply, and then install the fan.
The video ends slightly before I powered on the machine. I seem to have hit some file size limit or similar when filming and it split the rest into a second file, but I only had another minute or so of footage, so I didn't feel like trying to concatenate the files. I had powered on the machine, but it was hard to tell if the fan was spinning, and I didn't log in or anything on video. I then ended the video and went to do further testing.
The fan does work. When I first got the ThinkPad docked and booted again, I was in the mid 40s C. After some use it settled more around the mid 60s. Under load I have gotten up to at least 87C so far (yes, even with that fresh thermal paste), but I have yet to get into the mid to high 90s like before, and the fan sounds a lot healthier than my old one did in its last few months.
As you can see in the video, the fit wasn't perfect and I used a bit of tape to get it somewhat stable. I don't know what the long-term effects of this will be. Perhaps it will start to sag and there will be more wear on one side of the internals. This is too crucial of a part for me to try to return it and wait on another replacement that may or may not work, so I plan to just use it as-is for now, although I probably won't leave positive feedback to the eBay seller.
