Organ playing has a long tradition in Czechia and Slovakia. There are several reports of outstanding instruments from these countries. The names of numerous organists are also known, who accompanied the liturgy with choral or figurative playing and also performed as soloists. However, almost no organ music from the 17th century has been preserved in writing. Only fragments of the repertoire of that time later found their way into handwritten collections.

The forced recatholization during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), after the countries lost their political independence in 1620, only allowed solo organ music within the framework of Catholic liturgy: during the non-vocal parts of the mass, between them and after (perhaps even before) the ritual. It was therefore the task of organists to insert appropriate works. Since no printed compositions were available to them, copying manuscripts became the most important means of disseminating organ works.

For this purpose, in addition to copies of individual compositions, bound organ books (miscellanies) were primarily used. At present, apart from a few exceptions that may have been created earlier, around 70 of these organ books from various locations in Czechia and Slovakia are known to contain continuous notation from the 18th century. In addition to the increasingly printed sheet music, they have all been able to fulfill their purpose satisfactorily.
