Lilienfeld Abbey (Abbatia B. M. V. de Campililio) is a Cistercian abbey in Lower Austria. "Campililium" is the Latin name for Lilienfeld. The abbey was founded in 1202 by Leopold VI, the Babenberg Duke of Austria and Styria, as a daughter monastery of Heiligenkreuz Abbey (also in Lower Austria) and thus belongs to the filiation of the primary abbey of Morimond (Parnoy-en-Bassigny, France). In 1217, Duke Leopold VI gathered many nobles from his dominion in Lilienfeld to set off from here on the Fifth Crusade. After the crusade, he donated a relic of the cross that he had received in Byzantium to Lilienfeld Abbey. After his death, Duke Leopold VI was buried in the church of Lilienfeld Abbey. The funeral celebrations for the founder in 1230 were linked to the consecration of the church and monastery of Lilienfeld. In 1266 or 1267, the Bohemian Queen Margaret of Babenberg also found her final resting place in the collegiate church. After a long and eventful history of the Cistercian monastery, today the almost 20 monks dedicate themselves to the daily celebration of the liturgy, the reception of guests, cultural mediation, pastoral care and the administration of the spiritual, cultural and economic heritage. Lilienfeld Abbey is an important employer in its region.

The collegiate church of Lilienfeld, consecrated in 1230, was completed in 1263 and has the earliest Gothic hall choir in the country. With a length of more than 82 meters, the late Romanesque-early Gothic pillar basilica is one of the largest churches in Austria. The architecture is strongly based on early examples of Cistercian buildings in France, which are characterized by the straight choir and the restrained decoration of the church. In the first half of the 18th century, the interior of the church was furnished with baroque altars. Of particular note is the high altar made of black marble with six giant columns and a painting by Daniel Gran (1746), as well as four marble altars on the nave pillars with paintings by Martino Altomonte (1731-1733).

The "Luther Bell" in the bell tower at Araburg Castle in Kaumberg (Lower Austria), which weighs 970 kg and bears the inscription "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" (A Mighty Fortress is Our God), was donated by Lilienfeld Abbey. This special bell is part of the bell tower at Araburg Castle, a popular excursion destination, which is made of wood and has a flat octagonal tent roof.

Maximilian Stadler (1748-1833), also known as Abbé Stadler, was born in Melk (Lower Austria). His baptismal name was Johannes Karl Dominik, and he took the first name Maximilian when he entered the monastery. Stadler attended the Jesuit school in Vienna from 1762. Here he met many musicians, such as Johann Baptist Vanhal (1739-1813) and Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). At the age of 18, Stadler entered Melk Abbey (Lower Austria), where he was ordained a priest in 1772 and elected prior in 1784. He subsequently held various ecclesiastical offices and traveled extensively. Stadler moved to Vienna in 1796, composed secular works and arranged operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787) and Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842). In June 1786, Stadler took up a three-year appointment as Commendatary Abbot at the Cistercian monastery in Lilienfeld. The monastery was in a precarious financial situation at the time due to mismanagement and was dissolved in 1789. As a result, Stadler was ordered to the Benedictine monastery of Kremsmünster (Upper Austria), where he also became abbot. In 1803, Maximilian became parish priest of Altlerchenfeld (suburb of Vienna) for a short time until secularization. In 1810, he then took over a parish in Böhmischkrut (today Großkrut, Lower Austria), but retired after five years and moved back to Vienna to devote himself entirely to music. Maximilian Stadler died in his apartment in 1833 and, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), was buried in the Sankt Marx cemetery in Vienna.
