From the outset, my half-brother Ryan, two years my junior, made it abundantly clear that he didn’t consider me true family. When the pandemic began, I supported everyone in the family. I set up their home Wi-Fi, taught them to use Zoom, and even rewrote Ryan’s resume so he could land a remote position. No one ever said thank you. I didn’t expect one, but I silently wished for one. That little hope never quite faded.

I kept believing that if I gave more, appeared more, and did more, maybe they'd finally acknowledge me. Perhaps then, they’d stop making me feel like the ghost lingering on the edge of the family photos. So when Denise messaged the family group chat and asked for help organizing Easter, I didn’t hesitate. She asked if I could tidy the house a bit before guests arrived.
