I spent $700 on Easter dinner and got mocked in return. So I shut off the Wi-Fi, took the smart TV, and left my relatives pleading in the family group chat. My name is Andrew. I've always been the over-the-top sibling and the outsider from my father’s second household—or at least, that’s the way they made me feel. His first marriage brought me into the world. By the time I was 12, he had married my stepmother, Denise, and they had two kids together. My mom passed away when I was just 10.
From the outside, we seemed like a typical blended family. But living in that house felt like each room had a door that could only be opened from the outside, never from within. Every time Denise saw me, she'd offer a courteous smile—but it never went further than that. From the outset, my half-brother Ryan, two years my junior, made it abundantly clear that he didn’t consider me true family. My sister, Ellie, sometimes seemed to want to reach out, but once Denise glanced over, Ellie would retreat into the same chill as Ryan.
I learned, once again, how to sneak out of that home during my teenage years. My father wasn’t cruel, just passive. Denise would quietly exclude me from things if he didn’t intervene. If I ever clashed with Ryan, Dad would simply sigh and say, "Let’s not rock the boat." I realized early on that I would have to earn a place in that family. So I worked hard to achieve it. I got excellent grades, held part-time jobs, and earned scholarships to put myself through college. Afterward, I secured a great job in tech.
When the pandemic began, I supported everyone in the family. I set up their home Wi-Fi, taught them to use Zoom, and even rewrote Ryan’s resume so he could land a remote position. No one ever said thank you. I didn’t expect one, but I silently wished for one. That little hope never quite faded.
I kept believing that if I gave more, appeared more, and did more, maybe they'd finally acknowledge me. Perhaps then, they’d stop making me feel like the ghost lingering on the edge of the family photos. So when Denise messaged the family group chat and asked for help organizing Easter, I didn’t hesitate. She asked if I could tidy the house a bit before guests arrived. She wanted me to confirm details with the caterer too.
