He called me his servant in front of everyone. So I packed up and left—didn’t say a single word. Now he’s broke, and his mom won’t stop blowing up my phone.
Hi, I’m Serena, I’m 27 and a woman. Albert, my 28-year-old boyfriend—or whatever you’d call it at this point—and I had been living together for around 13 months. We’d been together for nearly two years, though it hardly felt like a real relationship by the end. Moving in together wasn’t some romantic, hearts-in-our-eyes moment. It was more about convenience. His lease had ended, my apartment was literally crumbling, and I figured it could be enjoyable. And to be fair, it was—for a bit. But it didn’t stay that way. I’ll circle back to that.
So this weekend, we got invited to a party. It wasn’t even thrown by our actual friends. Claire, who happens to be our landlord’s daughter, had said something like, “Hey, you guys are always cool about the rent. You should come by.” I’d only met Claire once before, face-to-face. She prefers sending rent reminders through group chats instead of talking in person. Albert, though, was all in, claiming this would be a great “networking opportunity.” For what, exactly? Who knows. He uses that line all the time—like he’s about to launch a campaign or something. Spoiler: He’s not.
Anyway, I went along with it mostly because I hadn’t had a night out in ages. I was also hoping for some free snacks, and figured if it got awkward, I could make an early exit. When we showed up, it was a lot more upscale than I anticipated. Not rich-rich, but classy enough—actual glasses instead of Solo cups, and a decent playlist coming through a speaker that wasn’t busted or staticky, which is rare in these types of gatherings. But the whole vibe felt off right away. Claire was wearing a lush-looking velvet top, and everyone seemed to already know each other—except us. Albert acted like he was on stage somewhere, maybe a late-night show. Super touchy, over-laughing, elbowing me as if I should be “on” too, trying to work the crowd. I was just there for the chips.
At first, I was wandering around casually, chatting with Claire about how the water pressure in our shower sucks and how the dryer makes weird banging noises sometimes. Meanwhile, Albert had already downed his first drink and was halfway through his second by the time I even finished mine. I teased him about working hard on a Saturday, and he hit me with this completely humorless line about needing to unwind after a week of “dealing with my nagging.” Just like that. It stung. Not even a smirk to soften it. I tried to laugh it off. He’s always had this snide edge, but lately his comments have been sharper, more direct.
Maybe I can be a bit much sometimes, but if I don’t chase down rent reminders or keep tabs on deadlines, guess who ends up getting the annoyed texts from Claire? Yeah, not him.
About half an hour in, I realized I was just trailing behind him, picking up his mess like some invisible support staff. He was deep in conversation with two guys I’d never seen before, and I caught him saying something like, “Serena’s super useful. I’d never keep the place clean without her.” But the way he said it didn’t feel like a compliment. It sounded like he was mocking me. I tried to shake it off again, but then he kept going—joking that he didn’t need to worry about rent being late because he had someone acting like his personal accountant and housekeeper. The guys laughed, but it wasn’t full-on; more like they weren’t sure if they were supposed to. I shot him a look, and he had the nerve to wink at me.
I slipped into the kitchen for another drink, but now I was properly upset.
Let me explain a little more. Albert has always been the type to mask cruelty as humor. If I ever call him out, he flips it on me: “Relax, it’s a joke. Why are you so sensitive?” But the jokes are always about things I do for him—or things I messed up. Like the time I accidentally shrunk his hoodie in the wash. He’ll bring that up for months, make it a running gag. But if I bring up anything he did wrong? Suddenly it’s ancient history and why am I dragging up old stuff?
