裡 li3 -- "inside, inner, inside of sth., the lining" is a composition of 衣 yi1 - clothes (semantic element) and 里 li3 -- village (phonetic element). 里 li3 -- village (more specifically a village of 25 or 50 families) and a length measure of about 600 meters, which used to correspond to the length of a village of this size - Karlgren. Another way for writing this character is 裏, which essentially has the same two components with 衣 not being contracted on the left side, but rather split in two parts, one on top and one on the bottom of 里. 里 is also the simplified form for this character and a frequent phonetic element in other characters pointing to the pronunciation „li". It is composed of 田 tian2 -- field and 土 tu3 -- soil, earth, with both elements pointing to the meaning „village". Ancient Chinese pronunciation „lji". Cantonese pronunciation „lei". Japanese pronunciation „ri".
