Jan Stine was an Occupational Therapist who specialized in emotional and sensory regulation of children from infancy to adulthood. Senses include vision, hearing, taste, smell, touch, proprioception and vestibular.....and children regulate differently depending on whether they are in a typical range, sensory avoiders or sensory seekers. It is important to know your children and how they react to sensory stimuli. No response is good or bad, right or wrong.... we just want our kiddos to be comfortable in their bodies and to be age appropriate and functional. All children are such a gift.... and co regulation with a parent/adult is important.
Discussion Questions
1. How does your child respond to sensory input in situations where outcomes are predictable? unpredictable?
2. What do you do at home to foster healthy responses to sensory input in situations when a child is content/playing nicely?
3. What activities do you do with your child to foster play, laughter, and heightened arousal? What do you do to practice calm activities? Alternating these teaches a child to practice self control.
4. At one point or another we've probably all felt shame within our parenting. This may be a little challenging, but please go around the circle and everyone share some positive ways you are showing up for your kids. (And if anyone else wants to chime in and share something positive they have seen in someone's parenting, feel free!)
