In the fields, you can see the wine vineyards right across from our property. The vineyards have many varietals including, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc among others. With the vapor barrier in place we now need to place clean sand on top of the vapor barrier to a minimum depth of 2 inches or more. The sand protects the vapor barrier from being torn or punctured by the concrete dobies (3x3 inch or bigger concrete blocks) used to support the rebar on top of the vapor barrier. This is a critical step in the foundation construction. The vapor barrier keeps moisture from coming up from underground and seeping in through the concrete. This will only work well if you use a thick (20 mil) low permeability vapor barrier. Look for the specs when you are considering vapor barrier and compare them against each other. The sand layer protects the vapor barrier by maintaining a 2 inches space between any concrete dobie or the rebar as you place it. When putting the rebar on the foundation, you tend to have to drag 20 to 30 foot bars or rebar (reinforcing bar == rebar) onto the pads. Without the layer of sand the rebar would likely cut and tear the vapor barrier rendering it much less effective. The sand layer's final height is checked using the laser level as it is placed. Sand is easy to level out with a rake turned upside down. The flat back of the rake allows you to drag the sand and the tines allow the excess to spill out evenly as you rake it. Here we are placing and leveling sand on top of the vapor barrier in the library, master suite bedroom and part of the great room.
