Are we facing a housing shortage… or a housing famine?
In this explainer video based on the article by Economic Architecture, we challenge the idea that the crisis is simply about not building enough homes. Inspired by Amartya Sen’s work on famines, we ask a deeper question: what if the real issue isn’t supply, but access?
In the U.S., residential real estate is worth over $50 trillion, and home prices have been rising much faster than wages. Housing has become the biggest asset class in the world. But when your home is also your main investment, the interests shift. Zoning rules, building limits, and policy decisions might not just be red tape, they can end up protecting property values, even if that makes housing less affordable for everyone else.
