🔥 Learn how to make the Perfect Latte on the Breville/Sage Barista Express! This is our Basic (LVL 1), beginner-friendly recipe that requires minimal tools and gadgets. Below, you see a detailed explanation of the ingredients, instructions, and how to prepare the drink. We’ll also explain the choice of tools and techniques we use and how they impact the final shot (See more 👇)
☕ About the Recipe:
A latte is a smooth, creamy espresso-based drink with a balanced mix of rich coffee and velvety steamed milk. Since the Barista Express has limited cup clearance, we extract espresso into a small glass first before transferring it to a tall, heat-resistant serving glass for a proper latte presentation.
☕ Ingredients:
Coffee beans: 17–18 grams (freshly roasted)
Milk: 200 ml (whole milk or alternative)
⚙️ Tools:
Breville/Sage Barista Express espresso machine (built-in grinder included)
Tamper (included with machine)
Portafilter
Funnel
Small espresso glass (for extraction)
Tall glass (300–360 ml)
Milk pitcher (350 ml / 12 oz)
For this recipe, we used the Loveramics Urban Twisted Glass—70 ml for espresso extraction and 360 ml for the final serving.
👇 Instructions (Play the video and follow along in real-time):
1️⃣ Prepare the Espresso
Grind: Set your grinder to a fine setting (around 5–6) and grind 17–18 grams of coffee into the portafilter.
Distribute: Level the coffee grounds by gently tapping the portafilter horizontally with your hand.
Tamp: Apply even, firm pressure with the tamper until the surface is flat.
Insert Portafilter: Securely lock the portafilter into the group head.
Extract into a Small Glass: Press the double shot button and extract 35–40 grams of espresso into a small espresso glass.
Transfer to the Tall Glass: Once the shot is complete, carefully pour it into the tall serving glass.
2️⃣ Steam the Milk
Pour Milk: Add 200 ml of cold milk into the milk pitcher.
Position the Steam Wand: Submerge the wand just below the surface to introduce air.
Steam & Texture: Create a smooth, velvety microfoam by keeping the milk spinning in a whirlpool motion. Heat to around 60–65°C (140–150°F).
Clean the Wand: Purge and wipe down the steam wand immediately after steaming.
3️⃣ Assemble Your Latte
Pour the Milk: Slowly pour the steamed milk into the tall glass with espresso. Aim for a smooth, even mix and try your hand at basic latte art!
4️⃣ Clean Up
Knock out used coffee grounds.
Rinse the portafilter and wipe the group head clean.
Wipe and purge the steam wand to remove milk residue.
