Clint Taylor, Bon Bon Station Reserve Manager, shows us how Knickpoints in floodwaters can lead to erosion gullies.
Transcript:
All right so I've followed the creek up upstream, the one that flows behind the homestead at Bon Bon. And I've got to this spot up here, which is about 2kms up the creek and see it's coming down the hill her in a nice flood out.
The reason this spot is significant is because there's a Nick point. That Nick point is causing or has caused in the past channelling of the Creek down into a more of an eroded Channel, which is what we see more of these days in the Australian landscape and a lot of us think they're natural creeks but in fact that creek should look like that flood out coming down. It shouldn't be channeled.
So it's a loss of lots of vegetation through overstocking, over grazing, over time compaction of the soil results in water speeding up. These Nick points, and in time if we don't do something here, that Nick point will creep up the creek, up there, and will ultimately look more like this down here.
It's not all bad - we've got ways to fix this. Yeah, it's pretty interesting.
