Paul Vario: The Untold Truth Goodfellas Didn’t Show You
On May 3, 1988, in a federal prison cell in Fort Worth, Texas, a 73-year-old man took his final breath. His lungs were ravaged by cancer. His body lay 1,500 miles away from the Brooklyn streets he once ruled. His name was Paul Vario. For more than twenty years, Vario was one of the most powerful captains in the Lucchese crime family. His crew reportedly brought in around $25,000 a day. He controlled cargo terminals at John F. Kennedy International Airport. He approved what was then the largest cash robbery in American history — the $5. 875 million Lufthansa heist of 1978. And he mentored a young, half-Irish associate named Henry Hill, who would later betray him, cooperate with the FBI, and help trigger 50 federal convictions. But two years after Vario died in that Texas prison cell, a movie introduced his story to the world — and got much of it wrong. Goodfellas transformed him into Paul Cicero, played by Paul Sorvino — a calm, measured, almost philosophical mob boss who sliced garlic with a razor blade in prison. The real Paul Vario was nothing like that. He stood 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighed around 250 pounds, had a hair-trigger temper, and once beat a restaurant maître d’ unconscious for spilling wine on his wife’s dress. The movie showed the heists. It showed the parties. But it never showed his sons. One burned alive at 27, refusing to speak even as he died. One walked away from the life completely and spent his final years in Florida making homemade pasta. And one personally escorted Tommy DeSimone to his execution — then vanished from public record forever. This is what happened to Paul Vario’s family — the story Goodfellas never told — and why the real price of that life wasn’t paid by the boss, but by the people who carried his blood. Paul Frank Vario was born on July 10, 1914, in New York City. His parents, Pro and Mary Vario, were immigrants from Aree, Sicily. They settled in Brooklyn’s Old Mill Basin and raised five sons. Paul was the second oldest. Trouble started early. By age 11, in 1925, he was sentenced to seven months in juvenile detention for chronic truancy. He never returned to school.
