Working with beat and rhythm and establishing strategies for developing part-work.
Ensure the beat or ostinato is established before beginning to add the singing of the song. This is the success criteria for students to develop successful skills in this area.
Simply put, performing the beat with the rhythm is the very first form of part-work. Students as young as Prep can work towards this as long as the beat is established FIRST, then the rhythm added as the song is sung. I like to play an introduction while they perform the beat in their legs (locked hips with rocking legs side to side) then they begin to sing with the rhythm in their hands. Sing in words at first and then, once confident, sing the rhythm names. This type of work will be more successful the more often you have the students for music. The more regularly of course, that you do this, the more they will be able to do it.
Our Music Writing Teacher Books (link below) have suggested Performance Extension ideas for teachers. These are designed for students who finish the written task quickly. They are always fun and really engaging for students. I like to introduce the 'extension activity' prior to handing over the written activity to the class so students know what to go on with once they've finished.
Catering for individual needs is also a focus in this episode so there are some good hints to support individual students.
