In this video, we explore a second variation for Hand-to-Hand Charleston, focusing on feel, timing, and gentle connection rather than set footwork.
We start with a simple exercise:
Followers turn anti-clockwise with no special steps — just walking and turning naturally
Leaders keep the right hand ready and make a light touch on the follower’s shoulder as soon as it becomes visible
no added energy — the touch is simply information, not a push
Once contact is made:
followers continue moving using feel rather than sight
leaders allow the follower to walk into the arm naturally
the follower takes their time to settle into jockey position without rushing
We demonstrate this:
from different angles
moving directly from Hand-to-Hand into the second variation
first using single kicks, then later double kicks
If the transition feels like a lot — especially if you’re newer — that’s completely fine. You can:
take extra walks
pause with a gentle bounce
or simply give yourself more time between moves
The key message:
Transitions don’t need to be fast. Taking more time makes your dancing clearer, calmer, and more enjoyable.
A confidence-building video for developing smooth transitions and responsive connection as part of your Lindy Jazz journey.
Stay relaxed, trust the feel, and let the movement unfold.
