This is not something you see every day! Captured here is an exceptionally rare 9-car solid consist of R127 and R134 refuse motor cars making a transfer from Coney Island Yard in Brooklyn to 239th Street Yard in the Bronx.
The R127 and R134 series, built by Kawasaki in 1990 and 1994 respectively, are dedicated work cars used by the NYC Subway for non-passenger purposes. Their primary job is hauling refuse, moving work equipment, and supporting yard operations. Although they resemble R62/R62A passenger cars, they are significantly different internally, featuring no seats, a lack of air conditioning, and special features that make them especially adapted for work service, such as a lack of pantograph gates between cars.
Refuse motors usually operate in short sets or mixed into other work trains. A full-length consist made up entirely of nine R127 and R134 units is nearly unheard of. Seeing them move across the system like this in one uniform set is extremely unusual and a rare opportunity for transit fans and rail observers alike. Enjoy!
