Having arrived at the viewpoint looking down to Lysebotn we realised right then that this was going to be the trip of a life time. Its 8pm and has been a long day starting out this morning 14 hours ago in Denmark.

We only have 6 miles and 27 hairpins left and we are going to make the most of them.

Lysebotn is a picturesque village situated at the end of the Lysefjord, surrounded by towering mountains. People have inhabited Lysebotn since the 16th century. The road was built as a works road during the building of the Tjodan hydroelectric power station and was officially opened in 1984. Prior to that the only way there was by boat or a very long walk over the mountains.

There's not much accommodation in Lysebotn, a camp site, a couple of B&B's and self catering en suit rooms at Lysefjorden Tourist Cabin. They turned out to be really nice plus there was a shop, kitchen and a bar.

We booked our rooms well in advance and checked what days the ferry sailed. Its one of the longest fjords and well worth the trip. You're not able to book the ferry more than 2 months in advance, unfortunately when we went to book the schedule had changed for this year. Ok so a little bit disappointed, however at least we got to ride out on that magnificent road.
