The Fort Nelson Fire Zone has experienced ongoing wildfire activity for multiple years, which presents unique challenges in land and fuel management. Multi-year drought and over wintering wildfires burning deep in the ground have resulted in tree stands that are unstable. Surface level fires are burning roots and causing trees to fall, resulting in more available fuel for the fire to burn.
Fire behaviour analyst, Eric Kopetski, and Sonja Leverkus from Northern Fire WoRx describe the challenge of working in fire effected areas with excess blow down. Increased blow down like this also makes it more difficult to access and action wildfires, adding to the complexity of wildfire response.
