In this first episode, Christian shares key elements for purchasing a car. We discuss the ins and outs of purchasing a car and understand its challenges. When buying a car from a dealership, there are several key issues to keep in mind to ensure you get a fair deal and avoid surprises:
1. Do Your Research First
Know the market value of the car you're interested in (use sites like Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, or TrueCar).
Understand what you or your family needs: new vs. used, safety, fuel economy, size, features, etc.
Check vehicle history reports for used cars (Carfax, AutoCheck).
2. Financing—Get pre-approved for a loan from your bank or credit union before visiting the dealer. This will give you leverage.
Compare interest rates between dealer financing and outside loans.
Beware of long-term loans with lower monthly payments—they often mean you'll pay more in the long run.
3. Pricing and Negotiation - Sticker price (MSRP) is just the starting point—dealers expect negotiation.
Ask for a breakdown of all fees, including destination charges, documentation fees, etc.
Be aware of add-ons like extended warranties, paint protection, and gap insurance—some are unnecessary or overpriced.
4. Contracts and Paperwork
Read everything before signing. Don't rush. Ensure all verbal promises (e.g., repairs, included accessories) are written in the contract.
Ask about return policies—most car sales are final unless the dealership explicitly offers a return window.
5. Warranties and Service - Understand what's covered under warranty, including duration and mileage limits.
Know if you must use the dealer's service center to keep the warranty valid.
Lemon laws vary by state, including what types of vehicles are covered (e.g., used cars, RVs, motorcycles), how many repair attempts count, and what counts as a "substantial" defect. Know your state laws.
