Recording of DCSWA Panel: Art-ists behind science storytelling.
As Edgar Degas once wrote, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” In a world where words and art are intimately linked together, this quote rings particularly true for the art linked to science storytelling. While science writing creates the landscape, science illustrations and drawings help build a mental picture of invisible processes and thus, evoke emotions in ways that only art can.
Jeff Day is an assistant professor in Medical and Biological Illustration at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he teaches courses in design and animation for their graduate program. He has also worked at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History as an educator and the National Library of Medicine as a digital media specialist.
Christine Liu received her Ph.D. at UC Berkeley in Neuroscience while communicating science through art. She is the co-founder of Two-Photon Art, creating zines, enamel pins, and jewelry that celebrate STEM.
