Medicare is confusing and you’ve probably heard a million different terms to describe different types of Medicare plans.
To refresh your memory, Medicare consists of a few main parts. Part A covers hospital expenses, Part B covers doctor expenses, Part C is Medicare Advantage, Part D is prescription drug coverage and Medicare Supplements helps fill in the gaps that Part A & B may leave behind.

WHAT IS A MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT PLAN?

So what exactly is a Medicare Supplement Plan? Original Medicare doesn’t necessarily cover ALL your healthcare expenses. Medicare Supplement plans also known as Medigap, are designed to help you pay for some of the things Medicare Parts A & B don’t cover - like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

TYPES OF PLANS.

There are 10 types of Medigap plans organized by letters, A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. Note that as of January 1, 2020, Plans C and F will be discontinued. But don’t worry, if you’re currently enrolled in Plan C or Plan F, you’re grandfathered in and can remain on your plan.

Plan G is a popular Medicare Supplement plan and covers things like Part A deductible, coinsurance, hospital costs, Part B coinsurance and copays, up to three pints of blood, skilled nursing facility coinsurance and more! One thing to note is that Plan G does not cover your Medicare Part B deductible.
Plans A through D are very similar. All four options cover Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, Part A & B coinsurance and copays, and up to three pints of blood. But none of the four have an out of pocket maximum.
