Kayak + hike day on the Half-collared & Giant Kingfisher Trail in Wilderness (Garden Route National Park), South Africa — with no music, just pure nature sound recorded on-location.
We paddled up the Touw River to the canoe landing and then followed the shaded river trail deep into indigenous forest. One of the signature moments on this route is the hand-pulled pontoon crossing over the Touw, linking the Half-collared section with the Giant Kingfisher section, before continuing to the trail’s highlight: the forest waterfall, with plenty of peaceful riverbank spots along the way.
To finish, we added the Bosduif Loop — a short but steeper climb that branches off the Kingfisher Trail and takes you higher into mossy forest for elevated views over the Wilderness lake system.
Along the route we also spotted (among others): Egyptian Goose, Blue Duiker, Red-chested Cuckoo (“piet-my-vrou”), Sombre Greenbul, and the Knysna Turaco (Knysna loerie).
