Join me on a relaxing POV evening walk through Birmingham City Centre. Home of the Frankfurt Christmas Market, Pigeon Park market and all the wonderful lights and amazingly diverse people.
We start from Birmingham Snow Hill Station, one of the city’s three main rail hubs, located on Colmore Row between the business district and the Jewellery Quarter.
We then move into The Great Western Arcade, a Victorian-era shopping arcade filled with independent boutiques, food spots, and festive charm.
Built in 1876–77 by the Great Western Company to span a railway tunnel between Moor Street and Snow Hill stations.
It survived bomb damage in WWII and is now a Grade II listed building.
With Features including ornate archways, chandeliers, tiled floors, and a glass apexed roof, making it one of Birmingham’s most admired architectural gems.
Next is the market in Cathedral Square known locally as Pigeon Park. The Square hosts a smaller Christmas market alongside the main Frankfurt one, with the landmark setting of St. Philip’s Cathedral as backdrop.
We then Make our way to Chamberlain Square
Adjacent to Victoria Square, Chamberlain Square is part of the illuminated city centre route and is one of Birmingham’s most historic civic spaces, named after Joseph Chamberlain. Today it forms the heart of the city’s Paradise redevelopment with striking modern offices, cultural landmarks, and festive events.
Named after Joseph Chamberlain, a Victorian-era mayor and statesman who transformed Birmingham into a modern industrial city. The Chamberlain Memorial Fountain was erected in 1880 to honour Joseph Chamberlain’s public service.
Originally a Victorian square, but much of its architecture was demolished in the 1970s to make way for the Brutalist Central Library.
The square has been remodelled several times, most recently as part of the Paradise Birmingham redevelopment, reopening to the public in March 2021 after five years of closure.
Next on the walk is Centenary Square is one of Birmingham’s most prominent public spaces, sitting at the west end of Broad St blending cultural landmarks, modern architecture, Created in 1989 to mark the centenary of Birmingham’s city status and redevloped in 2019.
