This temple built during 1747 – 1780 period by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe the last king of the Kandyan kingdom is believed to be the only Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka with the structure of a Hindu temple. Entire temple is built using rock hence it’s called a “Gedige”. The name “Galmaduwa” is due to its square shape and rocky structure.
