Today we are travelling to View Point of Victoria Dam. It takes four and a half to five hours to reach this place from Colombo and travel 44 kilometers from Kandy, passing Palkekele, Digana & Teldeniya.
The Victoria Reservoir as you can see in this video was built by crossing the Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka. This arch dam is located 209km upstream of Mahaweli River's mouth and 6km from Teldeniya.
If we mention the history of this reservoir, the construction of this dam started in 1978. The dam was ceremonially opened by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher. It is named in honor of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.
The dam measures 122m, with a crest length of 520m, a crest width of 6m, and a base width of 25m. The dam creates the Victoria Reservoir, which has a surface area of 22.7 Sq. km., gross storage capacity of 722 000 000 Cubic meters and a catchment area of 1869 sq. km.
Its main purposes are irrigation and hydroelectric power production. It is the tallest dam in Sri Lanka and supports a 210MW power station, the largest hydroelectric power station in the country.
