The Chagga tribespeople hail from the area around the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Africa. The Chagga are a Bantu ethnic group and they are the third-largest ethnic group in Tanzania. On my trek to the area, I met the kindest and most interesting members of the tribe.
In my exploration of the Chagga culture on this day, I was treated to banana soup, a tribe delicacy perfected over generations. I have dreamed about this banana soup and have not been able to find it in other parts of Africa.
Again, the Chagga people were no exception—the African themes of community, inclusion, and belonging were on full display throughout the day as I met with different groups of tribe members.
Through my engagement with the Chagga people I saw and learned the value of connection. It was a pleasure to watch the tribe members interact with each other. The mutual respect, humour, joy, and helpfulness they shared with each other is truly a model for a thriving community.
