In 1759, the Spanish attacked a Wichita village on the Red River providing the first historic information on a Wichita fortification. Later, European visitors to this village recorded more details on this feature, but historic descriptions remained limited. Archeological research in 1967 identified this village as the longest site on the Oklahoma side of the Red River. Subsequent investigations revealed that Wichita groups were constructing forts in the plains of Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma as early as A.D. 1450. This presentation examines the features of the few known Wichita forts and the changes in their construction and use from 1450 to the 1830s.
