It stands for
osteo = bone
sarco = muscle
penia = significant losses
If you've got both you're so much more at risk for falling that causes fractures. Today, at this moment you may be looking in the mirror at a fit and active woman who looks "healthy" and still be heading that direction.
It's like an insult, or a slap in the face for so many women to realize even active they have osteopenia or osteoporosis. Or you find you can't see muscle definition any more, and thus you do see more fat or "fluffiness" and your metabolism slows making that worse.
The answer is not "more" exercise which ends up being a path to exhaustion for midlife women in menopause, but fails to actually be enough stimulus for bone or for muscle.
If you've got a specific condition or bone-on-bone and haven't had a joint replacement chances are you need to work one-on-one with a Medical Exercise Specialist (think trainer PLUS) who understands the dual and competing needs you have.
If you're apparently healthy, active but need some regular activity that is DESIGNED for a woman in menopause (you're not broken though, so it's challenging.. yet realistic)... check this out:
