In a historic first for a sitting Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee personally appeared before the Supreme Court of India on February 4, 2026, to argue against the Election Commission of India's (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Personal Argument: Banerjee, who holds a law degree, argued as a party-in-person before a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant. She alleged that the SIR process was being used to selectively delete genuine voters in West Bengal ahead of the state elections, specifically citing the deletion of over 58 lakh names from draft rolls.
She highlighted issues where women were being deleted from rolls due to surname changes after marriage or minor spelling variations when translating Bengali names to English. Banerjee requested the court to mandate the use of the 2025 voter list for the upcoming assembly elections and to accept documents like Aadhaar and ration cards as proof of identity.
Court Action: The Supreme Court issued a notice to the ECI, seeking its response on the matter, and has scheduled the next hearing for February 9, 2026.
