Hordes of tourists could be seen at tourist spots throughout Taiwan during the Dragon Boat Festival long weekend. On Thursday, power consumption on Taitung’s Green Island quickly increased to 5,926 kilowatt hours, a 42 year high, and an increase of 200 kilowatt hours compared with peak usage in July last year. As last year’s electricity consumption also set a record high, Taipower was ready for this year. Let’s hear from a Taipower official.

At 10.19 p.m. on June 22, power consumption reached 5,926 kilowatt-hours. That is a record high in the 42 years since Taipower took over Green Island’s power plant. Taipower has already repaired all of the plant’s existing units, and also added on two more units. Taipower is extremely confident that when summer comes this year, the power supply in Green Island will be in a stable state.
An endless stream of tourists has descended on Green Island. On June 22 alone, 15 boats and three planes made trips to the southeastern island, and they were packed. More than 3,563 people landed on the island, bringing the total visitors to the island to 4,500. Currently, the island has six operational generators, while two more are on standby. Nearby Orchid Island saw a similar situation, with electricity consumption on June 22 at 4,917 kilowatt hours, which was still within a safe range.
