How long would you keep a chicken cutlet in the freezer? A month, perhaps? The Food and Drug Administration has announced the results of a special inspection project for registered import businesses, and several companies were found to be violating rules. Perhaps one of the more egregious cases was that of a Donghou Food Company warehouse in Kaohsiung, which was storing as many as 35 kinds of expired foods. Chicken cutlets were found to be still in the freezer unit a shocking eight years after their expiry date.

The company sells products mainly to fishing vessels, and there is no evidence that the expired food entered the market. All items were sealed on site and have been destroyed.

Expired chicken cutlets can be contaminated by microorganisms in the environment, especially bacteria. Even if you cook them, there would still be concerns about food safety, and they come with a higher risk of food poisoning.

Personnel from the Health Bureau sealed the expired food and sent it to get destroyed. But the chicken cutlets were not the only food item found to be expired at the warehouse. In total, Donghou Food Company had five types of food past its expiry date, which included oils, fruits and vegetables and processed seafood products. For the violations, the company was slapped with a fine of NT$300,000. But authorities say the expired food from the warehouse did not enter the market. Further investigations will be carried out in the future to ensure food safety.
