French (the language):
Metropolitan French (also called French of France, français de métropole or Hexagonal French) is the main national variety of the French language spoken in metropolitan (European) France. It is considered one of the standard forms of French and is historically based on the dialects of the Île-de-France region surrounding Paris. Linguistically, Metropolitan French belongs to the Romance branch of the Indo-European language family, under the Gallo-Romance group and the langues d’oïl continuum that gave rise to modern French. According to France’s national statistics institute (INSEE), metropolitan France had about 66.35 million inhabitants as of January 1, 2025, and Metropolitan French is the dominant language used across education, media, and government in this territory.

It is the largest country in the European Union by area, bordered by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Spain, and Andorra, with coastlines along both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Paris is its capital and largest city, serving as a global center of art, fashion, and culture. France is renowned for its historical landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, Mont-Saint-Michel, and the Loire Valley châteaux.
