Salam! Bənim adım Andy. Nəsilsin?
Hello! My name is Andy. How are you?
Let's talk about the Meskhetian Turkish language.
Meskhetian (Ahıska) Turkish language.
Meskhetian Turkish—also called Ahıska Turkish or Meskhetian Turkic—is a largely oral Oghuz Turkic variety spoken by the Meskhetian (Ahıska) Turks, historically associated with the Meskheti in southern Georgia. Linguistically, it is closest to Eastern Anatolian Turkish (notably the Artvin–Ardahan–Posof area) while sharing substantial vocabulary and features with Azerbaijani Turkish due to long-standing regional contact. The dialect retains Anatolian phonological and lexical traits but also reflects layers of borrowing—especially Russian—acquired after the community’s dispersal across the former Soviet Union. Despite limited standardization and restricted intergenerational transmission in some diaspora settings, the language remains a central marker of identity and mutual intelligibility within the community.
Meskhetian Turks (people and culture).
The Meskhetian Turks (also known as Ahıska Turks) are an ethnic Turkish community whose roots in Meskheti date to medieval Turkic settlement and were reinforced during the region’s incorporation into the Ottoman Empire from the late 16th century. In 1944, the community was forcibly deported from southern Georgia to Central Asia and other parts of the USSR, creating a far-flung diaspora (notably in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and beyond). Culturally, they preserve Sunni Islamic traditions, strong kinship networks, hospitality norms, and oral heritage (song, proverb, and storytelling), while adapting to host societies. Displacement shaped a resilient, mobile identity in which family cohesion, community institutions, and the Ahıska language function as key anchors amid ongoing challenges of recognition, return, and cultural continuity.
