Today we’re recognising the work of the dedicated team working tirelessly to protect the western ground parrot, or Kyloriny – WA’s rarest bird.
A decade ago, bushfire swept through the rugged wilderness of Cape Arid National Park – the last stronghold of the critically endangered western ground parrot.
Thanks to dedicated management and protection efforts, recent monitoring in the area impacted by these bushfires show promising signs, with population trends stable.
Efforts including removing and controlling foxes and feral cats and using prescribed burning to create mosaic areas of low fuel areas is minimising the risks of large-scale summer bushfires burning the park in one fire event.
With only around 150 western ground parrots left in the wild, the Parks and Wildlife Service and project partners BirdLife Australia, South Coast Natural Resource Management and Friends of the Western Ground Parrot remain committed to ongoing feral predator control, fire management and monitoring in the park to protect this rare and remarkable species for future generations.
