Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 Would like to welcome you each out to my backyard on this beautiful day before the storms come through. Today I am going to plant one of my favorite berry bushes for making jelly with.
Ah yes the gorgeous American Beautyberry is a gorgeous sight when in bloom but even more when the odd colored purple clusters of berries are ripe. Of course you have to keep a eye on them as they ripen cause the birds do so love them as well.
Callicarpa americana is a woody, deciduous, perennial shrub that produces showy purple fruits in the fall. It is a member of the Lamiaceae (mint) family and is native to the central and southeastern United States, Bermuda, and Cuba.
The shrub prefers full sun to part shade and is intolerant of deep shade. It will grow in all types of soil provided there is good drainage. Allow 3 to 6 feet of space for planting unless regular pruning is done. Pruning is best done in late winter. Prune low and avoid fertilizer to reduce height and fruit set. It is recommended that old canes be removed for rejuvenation of the shrub because the flowers and fruits appear on new shoots. It can be propagated by seeds or stem cuttings.
Native Americans used a tea of leaves and roots in sweat baths for rheumatism, fevers, and malaria. Root and berry tea has been used for colic. Root tea has also been used for stomach aches and dysentery. Early 20th-century farmers placed crushed beautyberry leaves beneath the harnesses of their horses and mules to repel bugs. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, beautyberry has been used for its astringent properties to slow down or stop bleeding in the stomach and lungs. This is just a few of the medicinal benefits of these beautiful shrubs.
Hope this video encourages you to also try your hand at growing this beautiful shrub. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them in the comment section below I will answer them as soon as possible. Everyone take care and have a blessed day. ❤🍀🦉
Blessings,
Teresa 🦉
