On 26 February 2026, during the Committee of Supply debate, Sengkang GRC MP Louis Chua said that 158 million ATM withdrawals in 2024 show cash remains important despite the rise of digital payments.
He urged the Monetary Authority of Singapore, HDB and banks to work together to identify underserved communities in HDB towns and ensure accessible banking facilities.
Chua also called on the government to mandate that physical merchants accept cash, saying a fully cashless shift could disadvantage seniors and other vulnerable groups.
