"Welcome to Waikato Hotshots - Franklin to Hamilton, where we take a trackside look at Tranzrail hard at work hauling people, coal and containers on the North Island Main Trunk Railway in an area bounded by Hamilton City to the south, and Franklin County to the north.
We begin at Hamilton Railway Station where we witness the changing of the locomotives on the southbound Overlander passenger express, and take in the sights around the city tunnel, rail bridge and marshalling yards.
We then catch up with an empty coal train as it heads for the Solid Energy coal mine at Rotowaro, west of Huntly, and the Huntly East Coal Mine where we are treated to a glimpse of the loading process. We then follow these coal trains on their journey to the Glenbrook Steel Mill as they thunder through the small towns, rolling hills and plains of the Waikato heartland.
Outbound from the Steel Mill is a steel coil train on its way to Mt. Maunganui that we track through Franklin County, which wets our appetite for the last part of this tape, where we observe from trackside the high speed long distance freights through the towns of Pukekohe, Paerata, Pokeno, Tuakau, Mercer, Meremere and scenic locations in between.
