On Wednesday, 13th August 2025, under the CLAN! project #SecuringRegisteredTitletoOurLands, funded by @thetenurefacility and implemented through one of our local implementing partners', Ogiek Peoples' Development Program, we proudly supported 18 community representatives from the Yaaku and Il Ng’wesi communities in presenting a landmark petition before Parliament. The delegation, led by Hon. Sarah Korere, MP for Laikipia North, urged Parliament to revoke the 1964 gazettement of Mukogodo Forest Reserve as a public forest and to formally recognize it as a community forest.
The Mukogodo Forest is bordered by four areas designated as community land: IIng’wesi to the east, Mayanat to the west, Shulmai to the northwest, and Lekuruki to the north. For centuries, the surrounding communities—particularly the IIng’wesi and Yaaku—have safeguarded about 10,000 hectares of this forest, with stewardship dating back to the 14th century.
Revoking the gazettement of Mukogodo Forest as a public forest and reclassifying it as a community forest would bring substantial benefits to the Yaaku and IIng’wesi communities. These include greater authority over the management of forest resources, stronger community involvement in conservation efforts, protection of indigenous rights, promotion of devolved governance structures, as well as improved conflict resolution and strengthened social cohesion.
