🍽️ Lunch in Macau: Kicking Off the Food Tour
We begin our Macau (澳門 - 澳门) adventure with a mission to sample as much Macanese street food as possible. The first surprise is chocolate egg pudding—served in a real eggshell. Creamy and sweet like a dessert pudding, it’s a delicious mystery, and a bargain at just 13 MOP. Sam, a self-proclaimed egg skeptic, skips this one, but it gets rave reviews for its smooth, chocolatey texture.
🥖 Pork Chop Bun & Milk Tea: Macanese Classics
Next up, we track down the famous pork chop bun (豬扒包), Macau’s take on the hamburger. After some searching (many stalls open only after 2 pm), we finally bite into a juicy, slightly fatty pork chop nestled in a crispy-yet-soft bun. Messy, delicious, and paired with a refreshing milk tea (港式奶茶), this classic street snack costs just 27 MOP. Beware the hidden bone in the chop!
🍮 Pastel de Nata: Portuguese Influence
No Macau food tour is complete without pastel de nata (蛋撻 - 蛋挞)—the iconic Portuguese egg tart. We savor these flakey, creamy delights from the famed Lord Stow’s bakery. Layers of buttery pastry give way to a rich, custardy center, capturing the unique blend of Portuguese and Chinese flavors that define Macanese cuisine. At just 9 MOP each, they’re an irresistible treat.
🥓 Sweet Pork Jerky & City Snacks
The street food adventure continues near the Ruins of St. Paul (大三巴牌坊), where pork jerky (豬肉乾) vendors line the streets. We try the sweet, tender pork variety, reminiscent of Canadian maple-glazed ham—soft, flavorful, and not as chewy as traditional jerky. At 45 MOP for a generous portion, it’s a snack that keeps on giving.
🥥 Handmade Coconut Ice Cream & Almond Cakes
Spotted next: handmade coconut ice cream with real shreds of coconut, scooped up with a shovel-shaped spoon. It’s refreshing, more like a sorbet than a creamy gelato, and authentically natural (25 MOP). As rain starts to fall, we grab freshly made almond cakes (杏仁餅), a powdery, sweet treat perfect for pairing with tea or bubble tea. A box of these crumbly cakes costs 34 MOP and makes a great souvenir.
🧋 Taro Bubble Tea & Durian Ice Cream: Sweet Endings
Sam grabs a purple taro bubble tea (波霸奶茶), describing it as creamy and sweet, reminiscent of “cereal milk” left in the bowl after a breakfast of sugary cereal. At just 20 MOP, it’s a fun twist on a classic. The final indulgence? Durian ice cream (榴莲冰淇淋)—pungent, creamy, and polarizing. If you love durian, it’s a must; if not, be warned! At 30 MOP, it’s a daring finish to our foodie adventure.
☔ Rainy Day Wrap-Up: Food & Fun on the Streets
Despite unexpected rain, the day is a success—seven or eight different street snacks sampled, each unique and affordable. Walking and snacking allowed us to explore much more of Macau, both its sights and its flavors. Our tip: skip the restaurants, eat your way around the streets, and make the most of your Macau experience!
