Welcome back to The Ultimate Historic County Bingo Challenge! 🏰✨
It’s Day 2, and the plan was simple: head back to Fulford and push deeper into the East Riding to tick off more of those 36 bingo squares. However, mother nature had other ideas!
The River Ouse has burst its banks, and I spent most of the day negotiating deep floodwaters and submerged paths. While the floods blocked our path and prevented me from heading into Fulford village as planned, we didn't go home empty - handed. We managed to bag a significant site for the West Riding bingo card instead!
In this video:
The Flooded Ings: We attempt to navigate Fulford Ings. This Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is a vital flood meadow, but today it was more "lake" than "meadow"!
Bishopthorpe Palace: From the east bank, we get a magnificent (and very wet!) view of the official residence of the Archbishop of York. This Grade I listed palace has been the Archbishop's seat since the 13th century.
The A64 Bridge: We trek under the massive concrete spans of the A64 Road Bridge over the Ouse, seeing firsthand how high the water has risen against the pillars.
The Bingo Update: A look at why we missed our East Riding targets but how we managed to pivot to a West Riding win.
A Bit of History:
Bishopthorpe Palace & Village: Originally known as St Andrewthorpe, the village was renamed after Archbishop Gray bought the manor in 1226. The Palace itself is a stunning mix of medieval, Tudor, and Gothic Revival architecture and has hosted Royalty for centuries.
Fulford Ings: These historic "ings" (an Old Norse word for grassland) have been used for haymaking and grazing for nearly 1,000 years. They play a crucial role in York's flood defense, acting as a giant natural sponge.
It wasn't the day we planned, but it was certainly an adventure! Stay tuned to see if the waters recede for our next outing.
Don't forget to Subscribe and hit the bell to see if we ever make it back into the East Riding!
