Everybody into the hole.
In 1864, Union soldiers dug a 500-foot tunnel beneath Confederate lines outside Petersburg. They packed it with gunpowder. The plan was simple: blow a hole in the line and walk through.
What happened instead became one of the most tragic and chaotic assaults of the Civil War.
This episode of Underground Syllabus breaks down the Battle of the Crater — the explosion, the failed plan, the racial politics surrounding the United States Colored Troops, and how hesitation and prejudice turned innovation into disaster.
History isn’t clean. It isn’t simple. And it rarely goes according to plan.
Welcome to class.
