Authentic Wayward Armagnacs: Mouréou 1988, Sancin 1982, Came 2001 & 2008

Описание: Wayward Cask/Rolling Fork (from the Starward folks) recently had a big firesale, so I grabbed a bunch of stuff. Which included several armagnacs - kind of a risky move, since Starward isn't especially known for yak picks, but for the pricing I couldn't resist. Today we've got a pair of younger offerings from Dom. de Came in the Ténarèze and an oldie from Dom. Sancin in Bas-Armagnac, neither of which I know. But to steer us into the tasting I'm also including a very reasonably priced Dom. de Mouréou from Authentic Spirits in France, who have much more of a reputation (including from me; see, e.g., the Simsat I loved at    • 7 Armagnacs for Father's Hams (Gaube, Pout...   ). And here we go:

Dom. de Came 2001 21 Year Old Armagnac-Ténarèze, Cask No. 244154 (bottled by Wayward Cask; 100% colombard, bottled circa 2023; 58.85% ABV), 89/100

Killer flight, kind of running a gamut of Armagnac styles from totally crushable to funky and weird. The Mouréou can't take a top spot here but it's got a very very crushable, Christmas spice-forward profile that takes on more of a marmalade character with water. Super nice. The Cames are both very good, leaning in an interesting, red-fruit meets Sauternes profile: the 16yo is a killer value for what Wayward Cask is asking but the one to buy might actually be the 21yo, which is absolutely the kind of yak that bourbon fans would dig (but without it losing any of the nuance you want from a serious brandy). And the Sancin gets very, very weird: a lot of the profile is black tea and dark chocolate, but then the palate takes an bonkers turn into funky beer territory. I kind of love it but you gotta know what you're getting into.
