Mount Awesome - AWESOME Hiking and Rock Scrambling in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Описание: Come along for one of my favorite recent adventures in the Wichita Mountains of southwestern Oklahoma. Today we are hiking to the summit of Mount Awesome. Nestled deep within Charon's Garden Wilderness Area, its summit offers views of many of the named peaks of the Wichitas.

There's no trail that takes you all the way to the mountain, but, starting from the Sunset Trailhead, you can follow the Crab Eyes Trail and a well-worn herd path much of the way to the top.

Mount Awesome isn't an official name, but it's very fitting as the view from the top and the rock scramble up are both pretty darn cool. Even the journey to get there is pretty spectacular.

The scramble up Mount Awesome is my favorite part of the whole adventure. As a hiker with climbing aspirations, it feels exciting without ever crossing into really scary territory. For climbers, it's a piece of cake, I'm sure.

There are coordinates for the summit of Mount Awesome in the video. Have those programmed in your GPS if you decide to go. Of course, don't rely completely on GPS for safety. Have a paper map and know how to read it. Have a compass and know how to use it. too. You are responsible for your own safety out there.

Also, maybe watch for rattlesnakes.

This adventure is 6 miles; 3 out and 3 back. Your hike could be longer or shorter as there is no trail for some of this adventure.
