Come along for my second expedition to Dry Creek Wilderness. After my initial explorations of the area last December, which took us to Chimney Rock and along Dry Creek on the eastern side of the wilderness (hint: it's a waterfall lover's dream), I'm back to investigate the two main tributaries that drain down the south side of Dry Creek Mountain into Dry Creek - and do some hammock camping and swimming along the way.
Since my first visit here, I have wondered where the old roads that crisscross the wilderness lead. Parking at the pullout on the north side of the wilderness, I head south on the old road there. I follow it down the mountain for 1.1 miles before turning right to follow another old road to Dry Creek.
I visited several of the waterfalls I scouted out in December (Wine Glass Falls, Sweetwater Falls, and Picasso Falls) on my way to the confluence of the two drainages I'll be exploring with Dry Creek. Once there, I go for a swim in the creek and set up camp.
The next morning I set off on the first drainage. I spot a number of waterfalls and even a "weeping wall", created by water that runs off a rock layer in the mountain. I go to the place where the drainage splits into two drainages before turning around and exploring the second drainage - less showy but still very beautiful.
After the exploring, I tear down camp and head up the mountain for a view of Chimney Rock on the north side of Dry Creek, high on the bluff. It was a fitting end to a grand adventure.
