Set out cracked corn at one of our bird feeders. the weather had changed from very cold to a warm spring like day and hundreds of bees came to the feeder. here is what I found out about this.
Why Honey Bees Visit Birdseed
1. Pollen‑like dust from cracked corn
Many mixed birdseed blends contain cracked corn. When it breaks apart, it produces a fine dust that resembles pollen in both size and texture. Honey bees will collect this dust—especially in early spring or late winter—because it can serve as a protein substitute when real pollen is limited.
2. Trace amounts of actual corn pollen
Some cracked corn contains tiny amounts of real corn pollen. Bees detect this and treat it as a legitimate foraging opportunity. They often leave feeders with visible “pollen” loads on their hind legs.
3. Opportunistic foraging behavior
Honey bees are highly adaptable. When colonies ramp up brood production in warming weather, their protein needs spike. If flowers aren’t blooming yet, they’ll turn to any source that resembles pollen—even if it’s unconventional, like birdseed dust.
The Bottom Line
Honey bees don’t eat seeds, but they do collect the dust from certain types of birdseed—especially cracked corn—because it mimics pollen and helps them meet early‑season nutritional needs.
If you ever want, I can also walk you through ways to reduce bee traffic at feeders without harming them.
