Have you ever seen bees hovering and circling in front of a hive and wondered what's going on? This is called an orientation flight — and it's one of the most fascinating behaviors in the hive!
Young bees (about 3 weeks old) take these short flights to memorize the exact location of their home before they graduate to becoming foragers. Using landmarks, the sun, and even the Earth's magnetic field, they build a mental map so precise they can travel up to 3 miles and still find their way back.
This footage was captured right here in Kingwood, Texas during a warm afternoon orientation flight at one of our Happy Bees Texas hives. 🐝🍯
