As peace negotiations over the war in Ukraine continue, top European ministers are meeting with President Zelenskyy in the Western Ukrainian city of Lviv to discuss Kiev’s progress on its path to EU membership. Ukraine received a candidate status in June 2022, shortly after the Russian full-scale invasion. Despite member states remaining divided over the issue, the EU’s enlargement chief, Marta Kos, says Ukraine’s membership is inevitable. Meanwhile, the US President is ramping up pressure on the Ukrainian leader to sign a Washington-brokered peace deal, claiming that Russia has an upper hand. With Ukraine aiming to become an EU member state before the end of this decade, can the EU reconcile external and internal pressure to welcome Kiev into the club of 27? And how can the EU, US, and Ukraine find a path forward to end the war?
