Описание: Decoherence is a fundamental phenomenon through which classical behavior emerges from the quantum laws of nature. It is the main obstacle to harnessing these laws for information processing. Quantum error correction (QEC) is a process that allows to protect quantum information from decoherence. Previous experimental attempts to engineer such a process faced the generation of an excessive number of errors that overwhelmed the error-correcting capability of the process itself. In the recent experiment [Nature 616, 50-55 (2023)], we showed that QEC really works in practice. We used it to extend the lifetime of a quantum memory based on the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill grid code by more than 2x.
