Day 8: Aberfeldy to Dunkeld – 16.1 miles | 25.91 km
Started late. Finished early. Go figure.
This was my longest mileage since the 27-mile monster on Day 2—and wouldn’t you know it, my leg finally started feeling better. Just after I decided to reroute around the Cairngorms. Classic.
Woke up to a massive spider above my bed (who needs an alarm?), then locked myself out of the hotel while resupplying at the Co-op. My phone—aka my digital room key—was inside. Waited two hours to get back in, then finally hit the trail.
The Tay Way carried me into thick Highland forest—absolutely stunning. Hiked through quiet woodlands, wind farms, and rolling hills before stopping for lunch at Loch Kennard, where I found what looked like a medieval sharpening stone embedded in the moss. Snapped some pics and plan to contact Historic Environment Scotland to learn more.
From there, I moved into the breathtaking Craigvinean Forest, followed by minor roads and a peaceful riverside trail along the River Braan. Rolled into Dunkeld and, praise be, finally got to wash my clothes. Small victories.
🥾 What is the TGO Challenge?
The TGO (The Great Outdoors) Challenge is a legendary coast-to-coast hike across Scotland held every May. Participants plan and hike their own self-supported route from the west to the east coast, covering hundreds of kilometers through wild and scenic terrain.
